Pune Grapples with Over 65,000 Dog Bite Cases in Three Years
Pune city has witnessed a concerning number of dog bite incidents, with over 65,000 cases reported since 2022. This alarming statistic was revealed by State Minister Uday Samant on Friday. Alongside this concerning figure, the Minister also highlighted the city’s efforts to control the stray dog population, stating that over 100,000 canines have been sterilized in the past two years.
Sterilization Efforts Aim to Curb Dog Bite Incidents
The sterilization program is a key part of Pune’s strategy to manage the stray dog population and, hopefully, reduce the incidence of dog bites. While the number of sterilizations is substantial, the continuing high number of reported bites suggests a complex issue requiring further attention.
Balancing Public Safety and Animal Welfare
The challenge for Pune lies in balancing public safety with the humane treatment of animals. While addressing the concerns of residents who have experienced or fear dog bites is crucial, ensuring ethical and effective methods for managing the stray dog population is equally important.
