Nizamuddin Slum Demolition Looms: Residents Face Eviction

Fear and uncertainty grip the residents of a slum near the Nizamuddin railway station in Jangpura-B, Delhi. Their homes, located along the railway line, face imminent demolition. The railway authorities have issued an eviction notice to 25 families, giving them an ultimatum to vacate by July 11th. If they fail to comply, bulldozers are scheduled to raze their homes on July 12th.

Broken Promises and Decades of Residency

Many of these families have lived in the area for decades. They express deep concern and frustration, claiming that promises of housing under the BJP’s “Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Makan” (Where there’s a slum, there’s a house) scheme have proven empty. Their long-term residency is now under threat, leaving them with an uncertain future.

Where Will They Go?

The impending demolition raises critical questions about the relocation and rehabilitation of these families. The short notice period adds to their distress, leaving them with limited time to find alternative accommodations and disrupting their lives. The incident highlights the ongoing struggle for affordable housing in urban areas and the human cost of development projects.
