Madhya Pradesh’s 108 Emergency Helpline Crippled by Abuse and Neglect

The 108 emergency helpline in Madhya Pradesh, a crucial service designed to provide rapid medical assistance, is facing a severe crisis. Instead of connecting those in need with timely medical care, the system is being choked by a deluge of frivolous and abusive calls.

Hundreds of Hoax Calls Every Hour Delay Genuine Emergencies

Every hour, operators at the 108 call centers grapple with an estimated 200 hoax calls. Instead of requesting ambulances for medical emergencies, callers are demanding liquor deliveries, mobile recharges, information about ration kits, and subjecting, in particular, female operators to verbal abuse. This constant barrage of nuisance calls not only ties up valuable resources but also tragically delays genuine emergency calls, potentially costing lives.

Systemic Neglect Compounds the Problem

Adding to the strain on the 108 helpline is a seeming lack of systemic support. The issue of hoax calls hasn’t been adequately addressed, leaving operators overwhelmed and frustrated. The lack of action to curb these abusive calls further demoralizes the staff and threatens the very viability of this vital public health service.
