Is Speaking English Un-Indian? Why Language Choice Matters in India

For many Indians, English represents a pathway to progress, a key to unlocking better opportunities. Yet, it can also be seen as a divisive symbol, associated with privilege and elitism. This raises a complex question: should how we speak define who we are as Indians?

The Double-Edged Sword of English

While some view English as a barrier, excluding those who haven’t had access to quality English education, others see it as a bridge to a wider world. For millions, English is not just another language, but their best bet at accessing higher education, better jobs, and global connections.

Empowering Through Choice, Not Shame

Shaming individuals for choosing to speak English disregards the aspirations of those who see it as a vital tool for social mobility. Instead of criticizing language choice, we should celebrate India’s rich linguistic diversity and empower individuals to communicate in the way they feel most comfortable and confident.
