India’s Pothole Problem: Are Roads Crumbling Under Development?

Are we building roads to progress, or are we paving a path of potholes? Across India, from Nagpur to Gurugram and Gwalior, the state of our roads is raising serious questions about the quality of infrastructure development.

Crumbling Roads and Inauguration Mishaps

Recent incidents highlight the severity of the problem. In Nagpur, a road collapsed before its inauguration. Gurugram saw a vehicle swallowed whole by a gaping pothole, while in Gwalior, the very earth seemed to give way. These aren’t just isolated incidents; they paint a picture of a widespread issue affecting commuters and raising concerns about safety.

“Where there are roads, there will be potholes,” a Minister quipped.

This dismissive response underscores the frustration many feel. Navigating India’s roads has become an exercise in dodging hazards, a far cry from the smooth, safe journeys citizens deserve. Every pothole feels like a jarring reminder of systemic issues within infrastructure development. Is this the price of progress?
