Nepal Flood Tragedy: Glacial Lake Burst in Tibet Identified as Cause
A heartbreaking flood disaster has struck Nepal’s Bhote Koshi River region, leaving at least nine people dead and several others missing. The tragedy has now been linked to a sudden and powerful glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) originating in the Tibet region of China.
Source of the Devastation: A Supraglacial Lake Outburst
According to a regional climate monitoring body, the flood was triggered by the draining of a supraglacial lake – a body of water that forms on top of a glacier. These lakes are particularly susceptible to sudden drainage events, which can unleash massive amounts of water and debris downstream, causing catastrophic flooding.
Climate Change Concerns Amplified by the Tragedy
This incident highlights the growing risks associated with climate change in the fragile Himalayan region. Rising temperatures are accelerating glacial melt, leading to the formation and expansion of these unstable supraglacial lakes, increasing the potential for future GLOF events.
