Odisha Student Sets Herself Ablaze After Alleged Sexual Harassment by Professor

A heartbreaking incident has taken place at a college in Balasore, Odisha, where a student resorted to self-immolation after allegedly facing repeated sexual harassment from her head of department. The young woman suffered 95% burns and is currently fighting for her life. A fellow student who bravely attempted to save her also sustained severe burns, estimated at 70%.

Professor Arrested and Suspended Following Tragic Incident

The accused head of department has been arrested following the incident. Both he and the college principal have also been suspended by the state’s higher education department. Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj expressed his deep concern and assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible. “Strict action will be taken against them,” he stated.

Student’s Allegations of Repeated Harassment and Threats

According to reports, the student had previously complained about the professor’s persistent harassment. She alleged that he repeatedly demanded sexual favors and threatened to ruin her academic future if she refused to comply. The tragic incident has sparked outrage and calls for justice, highlighting the pervasive issue of sexual harassment within educational institutions.
